Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Saade al-Shami declared that his country has requested support from the United States for gas imports from Egypt.
In a written statement from the press office of Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Saade al-Shami, it was stated that the Deputy Prime Minister attended the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings in Washington last week.
It was noted that Shami, who met with the public servants of the US State and Treasury Ministries, requested support from the Washington administration for Lebanon’s gas imports from Egypt, and also requested the international community to close the financial deficiency.
No clear information was given about the content of the aid requested from the USA.
It was stated that the meetings with the IMF and World Bank officials concentrated on the loans to be allocated for gas supply from Egypt and the World Bank’s support programs for Lebanon.
The Beirut administration, which has agreed with Jordan and Egypt to break the electricity extremity in the country, is staying for the final approval of the World Bank’s monetary support decision for the design.
Walid Fayyad, Minister of Energy and Water, had preliminarily stated that gas significances from Egypt depended on the impunity of Jordan and Egypt from the Caesar Act, which covers the backing of the World Bank and the warrants assessed by the USA on the Assad governance in Syria.
In September 2021, the energy ministers of Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Syria agreed on a roadmap for the supply of electricity and gas to Lebanon in order to resolve the energy extremity it’s passing.
There have been power outages across the country since June 2021 due to reasons similar as the incapability to supply the necessary energy due to the economic zero hour that has been going on for 3 years and inadequate structure in Lebanon.
As a result of the current emergency, the state provides electricity for only a many hours a day. Lebanese are trying to meet their electricity needs through generators they give collectively.
