A Cleaner Nigeria: Nestlé Volunteers Lead Nationwide Clean-Up Campaign

Annual Initiative Mobilizes Hundreds to Tackle Plastic Pollution Across 11 Cities

Lagos, Nigeria – In a powerful display of environmental stewardship, Nestlé Nigeria has successfully completed its sixth annual nationwide clean-up and community sensitization campaign. This year’s initiative mobilized over 500 employee volunteers to remove more than 5,900 kilograms of waste from market hubs in 11 different cities.

The campaign, a collaboration with the African Clean-Up Initiative (ACI), focused on markets with high foot traffic and significant waste challenges, including locations in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt. The effort targeted both solid and recyclable waste, highlighting Nestlé’s commitment to creating a waste-free future.

According to Victoria Uwadoka, Lead for Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria, the initiative aligns with the global focus on curbing plastic pollution. “Our commitment to fighting plastic waste is integral to our vision of a waste-free future,” she stated. Uwadoka detailed Nestlé’s comprehensive approach, which includes strategic partnerships with recycling organizations and an internal Employee Plastics Collection Scheme (EPCS) that has diverted nearly 6,000 kilograms of plastic waste from landfills since 2022.

Dr. Alex Akhigbe, Founder of the African Clean-Up Initiative, emphasized that the event was more than just a clean-up. “It represents a sustainability movement grounded in the principles of collective responsibility, collaboration, and the circular economy,” he explained. “Every bottle collected, every conversation initiated, contributes to shaping a culture of environmental consciousness.”
