New Initiative Boosts Health, Safety, and Dignity for Workers on the Frontline of Nigeria’s Circular Economy
Lagos, Nigeria – Nestlé Nigeria is deepening its commitment to a sustainable future by investing in the people at the heart of the recycling value chain. The company has launched a new Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Training Program that has equipped 100 plastic waste workers in Lagos and Abuja with essential skills and resources to work more safely and effectively.
The initiative, supported by key partners like the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), focuses on improving the welfare and dignity of these often-unrecognized professionals. The training covered critical topics, including occupational health and safety, proper handling of recyclable materials, fire prevention, and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Every participant also received a new PPE kit to ensure safer working conditions.
“At Nestlé, we are committed to building a waste-free future and recognize the crucial role plastic waste workers play in reducing pollution and facilitating a circular economy,” said Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Lead for Nestlé Nigeria. She explained that the program helps to improve the quality of life for workers while boosting their employability and productivity within the waste management sector.
Prof. Innocent Barikor, Director General of NESREA, praised Nestlé’s initiative, highlighting the importance of prioritizing the health and safety of those on the frontline of the fight against plastic pollution. “The focus on training waste workers is commendable, especially at a time when the world is seeking solutions to the prevailing challenges relating to plastic waste management,” he said.
The SHE training program is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision for a more sustainable future. By investing in the skills and safety of waste workers, Nestlé Nigeria is not only contributing to a healthier environment but also fostering a more inclusive and prosperous community for all.
