The Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike and her Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, counterpart, Tuesday, activate the ASUU four-week rolled over strike declared by the national body on Monday August 1, 2022.
The decision is coming after a joint emergency congress of the union.
In a statement released by the chairpersons of the two branches, Comrade Ogugua Egwu and Comrade Ikechukwu Igwenyi at the end of a joint emergency congress held at the Centre for Educational Services at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University in Abakaliki and was made available to news men by the ASUU AE-FUNAI/EBSU JOINT MEDIA TEAM, the group said that joint congress approved the roll over without a dissenting voice.
The branch chairpersons said the activation was in line with the National Executive Council (NEC) directive that all branch chairpersons convene emergency congress to approve the extension.
The chairpersons recalled that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union triggered off the roll over strike action after the second 12-week roll over.
“Considering that the Government has failed to sign the draft the Renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement more than one month after it was concluded by Professor Nimi Briggs-led Committee; and noting that the stoppage of members’ salaries, continued use of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and non-adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) had continued to short-change members while non-payment of salaries was exposing their families to hunger, starvation, disease and malnutrition.
They further said by “re-activating the national strike action today, August 2nd, 2022, members shall not participate in academic activities ranging from teaching, seminar and defence to statutory meetings of the Senate, Council, convocation or matriculation”, adding that the two-week deadline given to the Honourable Minister of Education to find solution to the lingering strike ended without any meeting or contact with the NEC.
The ASUU chairpersons said their members would resume teaching as soon as the strike was suspended and thanked the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their massive support of the struggle through their solidarity protest march on July 26th in the state. They also called on parents, students and well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with them to rescue the university education system from collapse.
The two branch chairpersons disclosed that their universities had been formally notified about the outcome of the emergency congress.
It would be recalled that in a press statement after the National Executive Council meeting of the union on Sunday, July 31, ASUU resolved to roll over the seven-month old strike for four weeks from 12.01 am on Monday, August 1, 2022, to allow government more time to satisfactorily resolve the outstanding issues.
