In the vibrant Ogu kingdom within Ogu/Bolo LGA of Rivers State, a captivating ceremony known as Iria unfolds every Saturday. This ancient ritual serves as a pivotal moment in the lives of young girls, symbolizing their transition from virginal innocence to womanhood.
During the ceremony, the Ogu council of chiefs plays a central role by awarding certificates to young virgins who successfully navigate the rites of passage. This cherished tradition, deeply embedded in the fabric of the community, has been upheld since the 17th century, showcasing the enduring cultural richness of the OKRIKA Ijaw people.
To qualify for the transition, girls must first demonstrate their virginity, a process overseen by the town’s women. Subsequently, they undergo comprehensive training on various aspects of womanhood while secluded in a designated room.
Upon successful completion of the rites, the girls are bestowed with certificates, signaling not only their physical maturity but also their readiness for the responsibilities that come with adulthood.
The Iria ceremony, beyond being a testament to the town’s history, exemplifies the resilience of cultural practices in shaping the identity of Ogu, Rivers State.
