Eguavoen Completes Two-Game Mandate in AFCON Qualifiers
Interim coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has announced his decision to step down from his role after the team’s match against Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday. Speaking to OwnGoalNigeria at the Kigali Airport, Eguavoen confirmed that his mandate was limited to overseeing two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, and that his task is now complete.
Eguavoen expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Super Eagles during his brief stint, thanking the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the players for their hard work and discipline.
“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys and grateful to the NFF leadership and all the players who supported me,” he said. “It ends today, which is the two-game mandate. I can’t talk about Libya yet because I haven’t been told anything, but I’m ready to offer advice if needed.”
Although his mandate has ended, Eguavoen signaled his readiness to assist the team as they prepare for their next opponent, Libya. He emphasized the importance of providing tactical advice to ensure a successful outcome in future matches.
“I want to remain close to the team and share inside information that can help us overcome Libya,” Eguavoen said. “No team is a pushover anymore, but with the spirit the boys have shown, we have a bright future.”
Eguavoen’s tenure concluded with a goalless draw against Rwanda in Tuesday’s AFCON qualifier. Despite dominating possession, the Super Eagles were unable to break down a resilient Rwandan side, thanks in large part to the heroics of goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.
Having comfortably defeated Benin Republic 3-0 just days earlier, the Eagles were left frustrated by missed chances and profligacy in front of goal. Eguavoen made one change to the lineup, bringing Fisayo Dele-Basiru in for Alex Iwobi, while Victor Boniface retained his place up front. Despite being a standout in the Benin match, Victor Osimhen started from the bench once again.
Eguavoen’s interim appointment came after the NFF failed to secure German coach Bruno Labbadia due to complications arising from German tax laws. The Federation had appointed Eguavoen as a temporary solution while searching for a permanent coach.
The future of the Super Eagles’ coaching situation remains uncertain, but Eguavoen’s willingness to remain involved signals that the transition may not be entirely abrupt.
