The decision by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets has sparked outrage among members of the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria. In response, the association has announced plans to stage a protest at the NAFDAC office in Lagos.
In an invitation sent out on Monday, the association called on its members and concerned parties to join in the peaceful protest scheduled for today (Tuesday) at the NAFDAC Office on the Lagos-Oshodi Apapa Expressway, Isolo, Lagos.
“We are extending our invitation to you to attend the peaceful protest on NAFDAC’s ban on alcoholic beverage drinks in sachets and pet bottles,” the notice read.
The association’s strong reaction follows the announcement by Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, on Monday, regarding the enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages in sachets, PET, and glass bottles of 200ml and below.
Adeyeye emphasized that NAFDAC would collaborate with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to enforce the ban effectively.
“We intend to work with the NURTW to ensure the enforcement of the banned products. We surely will work on that, and ensure that they are stopped and phased out,” Adeyeye stated.
During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Adeyeye revealed that enforcement actions had already commenced nationwide.
“As of January 31st, 2024, there is no alcoholic beverage in these categories that are registered by NAFDAC. I also want to inform you that the agency has started enforcement actions to enforce the implementation of this policy,” she announced.
Adeyeye expressed concern over manufacturers who continued production and possessed stocks of banned products, terming it as “flagrant disobedience to the laws of Nigeria.” She asserted that NAFDAC would take decisive actions, including prosecution, to address such violations.
As tensions escalate between NAFDAC and the alcohol industry, the planned protest signals growing resistance against the ban and raises questions about its implications for both businesses and consumers.
