Members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, Gentlemen of the press.

Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GafamOrg) and Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (cdhr), Lagos State Branch welcome you all to this World Press Conference to mark 84th post humus birthday of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAM, SAN, PhD (Hon), the stormy petrel, quintessential and indefatigable human rights lawyer and social crusader, a colossus that bestrode the landscape called Nigeria who left his indelible imprint on the sands of time in this clime.

We have been celebrating this post humus birthday of our leader ever since his glorious passage in 2009 as a tradition annually to commemorate the legacy of activism as a genuine defender of the poor, cheated, oppressed. We are also celebrating him for his ever doggedness in fighting to defend those whose human rights were abused and also for his political activism. While we hold the believe that Chief Gani Fawehinmi is already immortalised right from the time he was with us but we are enthused to play our own role of constantly putting him in the minds of the people for his enduring good work he left behind for next generation of political activists.

This press conference is necessitated as a result of the big vacuum created by the demise of Chief Gani Fawehinmi who while alive represents the heartbeat and conscience of the nation. He will forever be remembered for his roles always be on the neck of the ruling elite, putting them into check time to time and by making them to be on their toes, fought against all forms of injustice, exposing corrupt practices among government officials and challenge any anti-poor policies and failure in governance.

This year programme will centred around our letter of Appeal and request for the immortalising of Chief Gani Fawehinmi with re-naming of the HUMAN RIGHT COMMISSION after his name to be henceforth known as GANI FAWEHINMI HUMAN RIGHTS HOUSE and the renaming of the Unity Fountain Abuja as GANI FAWEHINMI FREEDOM SQUARE, ABUJA.

In view of the above, we have written a letter of appeal requesting the Federal Government of Nigeria to accede to our demand as a Mark of Respect and Honour to our hero, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, who such honour is due. We have also received an acknowledgement letter to this effect.

Without any iota of doubt, the sacrifices, the pains, travails and agonies that our Hero and Mentor Chief Gani FAWEHINMI passed through in the cause of fighting for democracy and ensure sanctity of human rights for all, we therefore believe these requests will not be too much to make and granted to immortalise him on the part of the government.

Equally MPORTANT is the imperative need to remember GANI with things that he would have done, cases he would have filed in Courts, battles he would have fought on the streets /neighbourhoods leading the masses and proffering suggestions on the ways forward.

Pursuant to the above and the objective of GafamOrg, with Gani allies and in furtherance of the ideals of GANI and by GANI’S tradition, we are using these occasion of his 84TH post HUMOUS Birthday to demand and proffers emergency measures to save the country from further escalating crisis that has enveloped and encircled Nigeria, rolling violently around like Ballon, with a force of a dangerous whirlwind unto precipice.
Enough of lamentations and condemnations while seeking for the way forward!

Gentlemen of the Press, In this regard we are passionately appealing to you as the conscience of our Nation to give your full and adequate coverage of today’s event,

GANI THE NATION,OUR GANI The iconoclast who fought with all his heart in ensuring our dear country becomes a nation free of oppression, injustices and leadership brigandage at the detriment of his life,
We as his followers and Apostles must continued the tradition of saying the truth even if we are in minority.

Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMorg) and its allies is using this medium to call on the Federal government of Nigeria to accept our charter of demands by creating enabling environment and ensure that it see lights of the day towards the reinvention and growth of Nigeria to a equitable egalitarian society.

We also like to seize this Opportunity to call the Federal High Court Judge, Justice Liman of the former Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division who had withheld a judgment without any cogent reason in the case instituted by National Conscience Party (NCP) , Gani’s political party and the only legacy bequeathed to us by him over the deregistration of the party by INEC in cahoots with the National Assembly,to deliver the judgement without any further delay because with the popular maxim “Justice delay is justice denied”, the machinations, manipulations and high wired politics cum political conspiracies of the vested and entrenched interests, powers that be are culpable which is ominous and to annihilate the leftist party which is highly condemnable.

Once again,we thank you for your listening pleasure.
