Columbine Shooting Victims Remembered in Emotional Vigil on 25th Anniversary
A solemn vigil held on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting paid tribute to the 13 victims, recalling their lives, bravery, and the enduring impact of the tragedy.
As candles flickered beside 13 empty chairs, the names and biographies of the victims, including Rachel Scott, Kyle Velasquez, and Corey DePooter, were solemnly read aloud, followed by a resounding chorus of “never forgotten” from the gathered crowd of approximately 150 people.
Among those lost was the youngest victim, 14-year-old Steven Curnow, and the oldest, teacher Dave Sanders, who heroically guided students to safety before being fatally shot.
Coni Sanders, daughter of Dave Sanders, reflected on her father’s bravery, noting his enduring legacy in saving countless lives and shaping future generations.
The vigil, organized by advocates including gun safety organizations, emphasized remembrance and action to address gun violence. Tom Mauser, father of victim Daniel Mauser, urged attendees never to forget the victims and to take tangible steps toward reducing gun violence.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden also issued statements calling for action on gun violence prevention, while former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, herself a survivor of a mass shooting, emphasized the importance of collective effort in effecting change.
Nathan Hochhalter, whose sister was paralyzed in the Columbine shooting, shared his family’s struggles and encouraged others to seek support, underscoring the lasting trauma endured by survivors and their families.
As the nation reflects on the 25th anniversary of Columbine, the vigil serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the ongoing need for unity and action to prevent future tragedies.
