A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital Tuesday nullified the rescheduled People Democratic Party’s (PDP), primaries which took place in Abakaliki on sunday the 5th of June, 2022.
This is even as the people’s Democratic party on also Tuesday reportedly presented a certificate of return to senator Obinna Ogba as the party’s governorship candidate for the next general election.
The court declared Dr. Ifeanyi-Chukwuma Odii as the valid governorship candidate of the party for the 2023 general election.
The party had rescheduled and conducted a fresh primary on the 4th and 5th of June after the first primaries in Ebonyi on May 28 and 29 that elected Odii as governorship candidate.
The Court ruled that the primary elections that produced Senator Obinna Ogba and other candidates were illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.
Justice Fatun Riman, the Presiding Judge, explained that the repeated primaries in the state on June 4 and 5 were not monitored by the Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to Riman, the rescheduled PDP primaries in Ebonyi are null and void.
“One, the rescheduled primaries were conducted when the matter filled on May 30 was already pending in the court.
“The primaries were not monitored by INEC, therefore, the rescheduled exercise of June 4 and 5, that elected Senator Obinna Ogba as another gubernatorial candidate and others are hereby nullified,”.
Bar. Mudi Erhenede, Counsel to the plaintiff thanked the court for the judgment.
Erhenede said the court has interpreted the constitution of the party.
“Selfish individual or group interests will by no means supersede the party’s interest. Good thing is that Justice has been done over the matter.
