On Thursday February 15th , 2024 Ebonyi State government commenced the demolition of illegal structures in the state capital Abakaliki.
Ebonyi government had recently announced it’s plan to commence the demolition on Thursday and urged the property owners to remove their valuables to avoid counting losses.
The Commissioner for capital city and urban development Sunday Inyima said the demolition exercise aims to sanitize the capital city and elevate its status.
He added that the state government issued notices for the removal of illegal structures, including containers and other unauthorized constructions along major roads and streets in the capital city, first in November last year and reiterated the directive in December.
Inyima further said that the demolished areas at Hausa quarters will be redesign based on the master design by the Hausa community the main owners of the place.
He decried that despite government directive the people refused to remove the illegal structures leading to the ministry coming by itself to carry out the demolition.
His words, “Notice had been given by successive administration before the administration of Hon. Francis Nwifuru and when we came onboard last year around November, we gave a fresh removal order to the owners of this containers and other unauthorized constructions, and by December we repeated with another reminder that they should remove this.
“ Abakaliki has grown into metropolis, urban city like any other urban cities you can think about and we can’t continue to condone this.
“The Flyover you are seeing here is flyover from government house and the road takes you to Ebonyi State house of Assembly what if you have a high profile individual or personality that visits the state and want to go to the house of Assembly will it be good for us to be showcasing containers along the road Noo! that is why we have insisted that it should be removed.
We have come to help them remove it and we are going to continue from here we move to waterworks road , Leach any where we see container in this urban city we remove it. Let us finish with sanitizing the urban then we begin to go into other areas of building control.” Inyima said.
