The people of the Ikwo local government area of Ebonyi State Monday celebrated their traditional new year called “Nnephioha”.
Nnephioha festival ushers the people into the period of eating new yam.
People from all works of life including the governor of Ebonyi state, and his wife, Francis Nwifuru, speaker of Ebonyi state Hon. Moses Odunwa, House of Assembly members, national assembly members including Hon. Chinedu Ogah and Senator Ken Eze as well as other top government functionaries graced the event.
Speaking, the Ikwo council chairman Bar Sunday Nwankwo said the traditional new year holds peace, joy, and bumper harvest, and other kinds of goodies for the people of Ikwo who are predominantly farmers.
Hon. Nwankwo noted that the annual celebration will bring great impact to the state and prayed for more blessings of God upon the people.
“We are gathered here to do what we call oye’osu’tara and this is one of the preliminaries of celebrating our annual Nnephioha festival, which culminates in the eating of new yam. If you heard former Governor Elechi speak, he said it’s like a bridge you cross while you head to the other destination.
“Last year there was an issue that they couldn’t resolve. When I came on board as the Chairman I was determined to resolve the issue. Part of the resolution was to preserve the sanity of where we call ili Noyo this is a traditional spot and we are saying this is the social aspect of Nnephioha, don’t mix it up with the traditional aspect so that Reverend fathers, priests, and Christians will not be afraid of fetish things and refuse or join the tradition. They stay side by side.
“This annual celebration will bring great impact to the state. Culturally, it’s adding to the cultural feathers of the state. Every clan has its own, and today’s engagement is like expanding the socio-scope of Nnephioha to capture modernity alongside tradition so with this,
“This traditional new year holds peace, joy, bumper harvest, and other kinds of goodies. My prayer is that whatever didn’t go well in the last traditional year, by our prayers today and commitment, it will be a thing of the past as we look forward to greater new traditional years”.
