
Few days after the apex court affirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu as Nigerian president, Peoples Democratic Party chieftains in Ebonyi state have resigned from the party and may likely join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Obinna Ogba who represented Ebonyi central zone between 2015 and 2023 and contested the last governorship election in Ebonyi State, former House of Representatives member Hon. Livinus Makwe who represented Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo federal constituency between 2015 and 2023 resigned from the opposition party.
The Labour Party Deputy Governorship candidate in the last general election in Ebonyi, Prince Ajah Nwabueze, also resigned from the Labor Party.
Some state working committees of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) including James Alaka the organizing Secretary of the party, Mrs. Joy Igwe Ex-Officio, and Uchenna Nwafor Zonal Auditor South East among others also resigned from PDP.
Six local government Chairmen of the party, Agbom Friday of Ezza south, Nwofe Philip, lzzi, Nwobasi Ude Chizoba, Ohaozara, Chukwu Micheal lvo, Ifere Sunday Bright, lkwo and Ndukwe Orji Okam Edda have also left the party.
The PDP chieftains resigned from the party on Friday, October, 27th 2023 saying that their resignations were personal and would announce their next move after due consultation with their family members and supporters.
Senator Ogba in his resignation letter addressed to PDP Chairman Nkalagu Ward in Ishielu local government area, said he will forever remain grateful to the party and her leaders from ward, LGA, state, zonal to National levels, but that it was time to quit the party.
Senator Ogba who has been a member of the PDP since August 1998 and has served as state chairman of the party in Ebonyi noted that PDP has no respect for loyalty therefore he has to resign.
The resignation letter read in parts, “Sir, this is to officially communicate to you of resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This will serve as an official communication to the party from Ward, LGA, State, Zonal, and Nationalevelsel through your office.
“ This decision is personal. As an individual, I have made my modest contribution by working for the growth and development of PDP from ward to National level since its creation in August 1998 Sheraton Hotel Abuja.
“PDP on the other hand as a political party and electoral platform has Contributed positively towards the growth of my political fortunes and I will forever remain grateful to the party and its leaders from ward, LGA, state, zonal to National level, but it is time to quit. On my future Political plans and arrangements, this will be properly communicated after due consultation with my immediate family, political family, and associates”.
All other officials of the party who left the PDP, also made their resignation letters available to journalists in Abakaliki.
The PDP Youth leader Ivo LGA, Ukah Samuel Aroh has also resigned from the opposition party.
Others include Hon. Chukwu Cornelius (Oriokata) who contested the Chairmanship election under PDP in the last local government election alongside 11 councillorship contestants in the local government have also announced their resignation from PDP
Also, the forum of PDP former Councillors in the area through their spokesperson Hon. Justice Uka announced their resignation from the PDP.
Contacted on the phone the PDP Acting chairman in Ebonyi state Mr. Augustine Nwazunku said that the party chieftains who resigned from the party are playing their scripts and romance alleging that they did not follow due process in their resignation as contained in the party constitution.
Nwazunku further said that some of the party members who resigned had earlier been suspended from the party for anti-party activities.
