Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru the wife of Ebonyi state governor Wednesday said it is her fervent commitment to create an environment where everyone can live free from fear and discrimination in the state.
She states this in Abakaliki during the 2024 International Women’s Day.
She said through her pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons” (BERWO), more women will be invested in and empowered.
“This year’s celebration, just like every other year, is meant to refresh our minds on our status as women. It is a call for us to keep our eyes firmly on developing our potential and adding value to society. As such, the theme of this year is, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
“We are special in many ways. Women are the pride of every society. We dominate both numerically and productively. These core tenets are products of measured and steady investments in women – in skill development, education, social upgrade, health, and overall welfare. As such, investing in ourselves activates our many potentials to create a more inclusive and prosperous future for our State and Nation.
“Studies have shown, that when women are empowered and given equal opportunities, societies thrive. Women have always been at the forefront of effecting meaningful changes, driving innovation, leading communities, and shaping societies. Women are making good contributions in every field and are essential partners in building a more sustainable and equitable world.

“Investing in women is not just the right thing to do; it is the smart thing to do. A perfect example is a case study of Ebonyi State. We have set a high standard for women inclusiveness in Governance across the Nation. In case you are too quick to forget, Ebonyi State today has Her first female Deputy Governor, a female SSG, Head of Service, Commissioners for Budget and Planning, Aviation, Human Capital Development, Agriculture, and of course, Women Affairs. These are key ministries that are directly responsible for the economic growth of every society. Additionally, we have women as Vice Chairmen and Secretaries of all Local Government Areas in the State. In our House of Assembly, we are represented as well.
“The inclusion of women in these vital areas of Governance and administration at various levels is a testament to the truth that women are catalysts for progress because no other State is on such a speedy wave of development as Ebonyi State. And so, I appreciate very deeply, my darling husband, Father, and Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
“On our part, my foundation “Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons” (BERWO), is keenly dedicated to investing in Ebonyi women. We cannot develop if we do not eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. Therefore, it is our fervent commitment to create an environment where everyone can live free from fear and discrimination.
” As part of our activities for this year’s celebration, we have carefully mapped out various events and competitions to make this time significant and impactful. We have:
a.Young Farmers’ Club: This is meant to activate our gardens at schools. It has its prize.
b.Spelling Bee Competition: This is to encourage our children to read and understand very well. The winner will go home with a monetary prize of two million naira (N2m).
c. Garden Competition: This is to encourage our women to go back to our backyard gardens. It has a total prize of twenty million naira (N20m).
d. Second Chance Education: This is meant to encourage our women in the rural areas, those who did not have the opportunity to attend school, to have a chance to learn at least formal education. This has its prize as well.
e. Fabric Competition: This is for us to encourage our youths to make use of their hands and be creative. It has a total cash prize of twenty-five million naira.
f. “Young Female Football Players and to encourage our young girls in sporting activities, which will stop gender discrimination. It has its prize as well. This and many more are what we have in stock for Ebonyi women.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to investing in women and girls. Let us harness our potential, amplify our voices, and accelerate progress towards a more equal and inclusive society. Together, we can build a State where every woman and girl can achieve their dreams and contribute their talents to the betterment of all humanity.
” It is only in doing so, that we can confidently break those barriers hindering us from reaching our goals. As a State, we are proud of our stellar initiatives. We will continue to support our Government and ensure that we make excellent use of every opportunity given to us to protect our women so that more chances of development will come our way. I wish us all, a wonderful celebration.
