Ebonyi State University (EBSU) yesterday held the 15th Batch induction ceremony of Medical Laboratory Scientists with about 99 new Medical Laboratory Science graduates of the university inducted.
At the induction, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in the State, Oguzor Offia Nwali said that the recruitment of 195 medical personnel in the 13 general hospitals across the 13 local government areas of the state as ordered by Governor Francis Nwifuru will rejuvenate the health system of the state.
Commissioner Nwali, who is a Laboratory Scientist said the 195 medical personnel will revive the general hospitals and primary healthcare system in the state.
He said “We will find a way to make case for a stability, for a sense of humor and practical science and spirited spirit in Medical Laboratory Science.
“We will do this because we are not going to leave this association for anybody. The association is ours; it is for us to do everything possible to make it better and making it better is not going to be a long story. We are going to do what is best and we are going to do what is best to keep this association.
“When you finish your internship, some of the best brains among you will still need to come back to the university. We will provide avenues for you to be employed, for you to add whatever you have learned in different areas of your internship to Ebonyi, and the hospitals in our dear state that are now dead zones will no longer be dead zones. We will revive our hospitals.
“The Governor has ordered the recruitment of 195 health personnel including Medical Doctors, Nurses, Lab Scientists, and other health professionals in our general hospitals. We are getting there and it is going to be better”.
In his address, Registrar, of the Medical Laboratory Scientist Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr. Tosan Erhabor said Medical Laboratory Science has come of age and recorded significant growth in the country.
“The Medical Laboratory has come of age, achieve significant growth over the years, and become one of the pillars of this university.
“Currently, the program ranks as one of the most attractive courses for admission seekers across the country while every contemporary institution has commenced the program of Medical Laboratory Science.
“This rapid growth wouldn’t have been possible without stakeholders working in partnership with the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria”, he said.
Recall, there has been a shortage of manpower across the 13 general hospitals in the state which has kept the hospitals in a deplorable state. One medical Doctor was said to be in charge of the 13 general hospitals.
Governor Nwifuru who was unhappy over the state of the hospitals and primary health system in the state, ordered the recruitment of 39 Pharmacists, 39 Medical Doctors, 39 Medical Laboratory Scientists, and 39 Sundry medical Staff totaling 195 medical personnel to boost the manpower of the general hospitals.
