All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), South East Zone, has held its mandatory continuing professional training (MCPT) program in Abakaliki Ebonyi State.
The program held at the women development center lasted from the 20th through 23rd of September, 2022 with the theme Emerging administrative and management innovations and techniques for handling contemporary issues and challenges in Nigerian Secondary Education.
The principals noted that the world is dynamic hence the need for change in management and administrative strategies in schools to reflect the world dynamism.
In a communique issued at the end of the program, ANCOPSS condemned increasing insecurity in secondary schools in Nigeria, and advocate for proactive measures to address the situation.
The Principals cited attacks on Secondary Education to include gunmen attacks, abduction of staff and students, kidnapping, rape, suicide, mines, and explosives among others.
In the Communique signed by Ezeah Livinus, Chairman, ANCOPS, South East Zone and the Secretary, Chukwu Emmanuel, the Principals bemoaned the rising insecurity in the schools and it is affecting teaching and learning and urged the government to tackle the problem.
According to them, as agents of innovation, principals should use supervisory and record management practices as well as innovative techniques for improving students’ academic performance.
“Government should provide schools with e-learning facilities and other modern equipment to facilitate the implementation of the curriculum.
“The relevant stakeholders in education should take proactive actions to address the rising insecurity in secondary schools.
“There is a need for the provision of adequate funds for the implementation of innovation strategies”, the statement read in parts.
ANCOPS commended the Ebonyi state government and Ebonyi wing NUT for their support.
National Deputy President of NUT Comrade Dr. Kelvin Nwankwo in a remark, announced to the teachers that the 65 years of retirement age and 40 years of service proposed by the federal government, shall soon take effect that the publication of the Gazette of the bill is been expected.
He explained that NUT went for the extension of the retirement age and service year because of a lack of teachers in various schools of the country and the government have refused to employ new teachers into the schools
He, therefore, urged teachers who are still in service to keep working hard noting that examination malpractice is a result of none teaching students because of the non-availability of teachers in the schools.
