The government of Ebonyi State Tuesday celebrated the second civilian governor of the state and one of the founding fathers Gov Martin Elechi.
Elechi clocked 83 years.
Former secretary to the federal government Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, Minister of Works Engr David Umahi, Senator Sam Egwu, senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Senator Okorie Ani, Senator Ken Eze, Hon Chinedu, other national assembly members, and Dr Nnia Nwodo were all present at the birthday celebration.
Hon. Francis Nwifuru the state governor during the event said he was thankful to God for the life of Elechi and for giving Ebonyi state an eminent leader like him.
“Today, the Ebonyi State Government having understudied the achievements of this great man before, during, and even his political ascendancy, deemed it necessary to celebrate him. We must also be thankful to God for his life and for giving our state an eminent leader like him.
Out of his love for our people, Chief Elechi powered by undying democratic ideals fought for the creation of our dear Ebonyi State.
“It is indeed gratifying to know that as a founding father of our dear Ebonyi State, Chief Martin Nwancho Elechi has devoted his public life to engendering a truly democratic, just, and egalitarian society where all people are allowed to attain a happy and prosperous life.
” Truly, the Government and people of Ebonyi State chose to celebrate Chief Martin Elechi who has been a father figure and a mentor to younger politicians across the length and breadth of this state. He is a seasoned teacher— tolerant and cosmopolitan in outlook and a stickler for excellence.
Senator Anyim Pius Anyim in his remarks commended the state governor for celebrating Elechi while alive and recommended that Ebonyi founding fathers should be included in the celebration of democracy in the state.
“Chief Elechi was indeed the Governor of Ebonyi State but I tell you, that was just a calling to fill a vacuum which he accepted in his usual willingness to make the utmost sacrifice for Ebonyi people”, he said.
Former Governor of the state and former Minister of Education, Senator Sam Egwu averred that Elechi displayed exemplary leadership as the Governor of the state and made an enormous contribution to its development.
“Your dedication and tireless effort in spearheading the struggle for the creation of the state has left an indelible mark on the history of our beloved state.
Your resilience in the struggle for the creation of Ebonyi State served as an inspiration to countless individuals, myself included.
At the end of my tenure as the first democratically elected governor of the state, I felt naturally happy to transmit the administration of the new state to you who spearheaded the struggle of the state creation.
“As a governor, you demonstrated exemplary leadership and made significant contributions to the development of our state.
On his part, Elechi’s successor and Minister of Works, Sen David Umahi described him as an experienced administrator who taught him administration in governance.
Elechi, in his remarks, lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru for organizing the event in his honor, describing it as the best gift to him.
He opined that the Governor has opened a new chapter in governance and assured of his continued support to his administration.
