The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Friday, described family planning as “key” to reduction of poverty and advised Ebonyi Government to prioritize investment in family planning and contribute annually to the national economy.
The government of Ebonyi State had on Tuesday set up a family planning technical working group to ensure an increase in the uptake of the services by Ebonyi people.
Dr. Yakubu Aliyu, UNFPA’s Programme Specialist in Reproductive Health stated this during the “Dissemination of National Guidelines for State-Funded Procurement of Family Planning” in Abakaliki.
The Programme was organized by the UNFPA in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ebonyi state Government.
Dr. Yakubu said the rate of facilities offering modern contraceptive methods in Ebonyi has increased to 98 percent.
He noted that the 98% increase in the facilities in Ebonyi was from the Nigeria Demographics Health survey of 2021.
According to him, in 2013, there was a slight decline in the percentage of facilities that offered at least three modern contraceptive methods in Ebonyi but the rate has increased to 98% of all facilities.
“Since that time, there has been an increase in the percentage of facilities offering at least three types of modern contraceptives.
“In 2014, approximately 90% of facilities indicated they offer at least three modern contraceptives. That rate has increased to 98% of all facilities offering at least three contraceptive methods in 2021.
“This upward trend has been consistent across facility levels, except for secondary facilities in 2015-18 and primary facilities from 2019 to 2021,” he added.
In his presentation, Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, Director, of Public Service, Ebonyi Ministry of Health, commended the UNFPA support to improve health delivery for its people in the state.
Dr. Ebenyi explained that the percentage distribution of contraceptive use by methods is five, including condoms 51 percent, implants 29, injectables 9, IUDs 7, and pills 4 percent.
