Jose Peseiro, former coach of the Super Eagles, has expressed regret over the absence of Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), citing it as a significant factor in Nigeria’s performance.
Boniface, a promising 23-year-old forward, was sidelined from the tournament due to an injury sustained during the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi. Peseiro had intended to deploy a tactical system that would have paired Boniface with Victor Osimhen upfront, envisioning a potent attacking partnership.
Peseiro’s departure from the Super Eagles came amidst failed contract renewal negotiations with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). Despite leading Nigeria to the final of AFCON 2023, where they ultimately lost to Ivory Coast, Peseiro believes Boniface’s absence hindered their chances of clinching the trophy.
In an interview in Portugal, Peseiro remarked, “I will say that Boniface would have made the difference without injury.” He emphasized Boniface’s versatility and confidence, highlighting his potential to seamlessly fit into Nigeria’s attacking style and serve as a crucial element in their gameplay.
Reflecting on the impact of Boniface’s absence, Peseiro lamented the limitations it imposed on refining Nigeria’s tactical approach during the tournament.
Peseiro’s comments underscore the significance of player availability and tactical planning in high-stakes competitions like AFCON, leaving fans to ponder what might have been for the Super Eagles with Boniface in their lineup.
