A filling station owned by Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc, located on Obafemi Awolowo Road in Ikeja, Lagos, was engulfed by fire on Thursday morning, resulting in significant damage.
The fire, which started when a gas tanker exploded while discharging its contents into storage tanks, caused widespread destruction. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that the explosion led to the inferno, which consumed eight vehicles, including the gas tanker, and partially damaged a nearby two-storey building.
Adeseye reported that the fire crews arrived promptly but found that the blaze had already spread rapidly, affecting both the vehicles at the station and the surrounding structures. Several individuals sustained injuries and were immediately transported to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment, though the exact number of those injured remains unclear.
Nosa Okunbor, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), provided additional details, stating that the incident occurred while gas was being dispensed to customers. A malfunction in an 8-ton LPG gas cylinder truck led to a rapid gas escape, which subsequently ignited, sparking the fire.
The fire has since been extinguished, and all necessary safety measures have been implemented to secure the two LPG gas cylinder trucks at the site. The incident response involved multiple agencies, including LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigerian Police Force, all working together to restore normalcy to the area.
Two adult males sustained severe burns, while others received minor injuries. The injured were provided with immediate medical attention by the Agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Team and LASAMBUS before being transferred to LASUTH for further treatment.
The fire was eventually brought under control by the coordinated efforts of the emergency response teams.
