Yemisi Ogunleye Secures Germany’s First Women’s Shot Put Gold in Nearly Three Decades
In a thrilling conclusion to the women’s shot put final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Germany’s Yemisi Ogunleye clinched the gold medal with an impressive throw of 20.00 meters. This victory marks Germany’s first win in the event since Astrid Kumbernuss took gold in 1996, ending a 28-year drought.
Ogunleye’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as she delivered a winning throw that secured her place in Olympic history. Wesche, who seemed poised for victory after her fifth attempt, was ultimately overtaken by Ogunleye’s exceptional final throw.
Notably, Nigeria was not represented in the women’s shot put event where Ogunleye claimed gold. However, the country did have a presence in other throwing events, including the men’s shot put. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Nigeria’s hope in the discipline, finished in sixth place.
