Globacom Partners with Lagos State to Launch M-Agric Agricultural Support Service

M-Agric: Empowering Farmers or Just Another Lottery?

Globacom, in partnership with the Lagos State Government, has launched M-Agric, an innovative agricultural support service aimed at guiding users through the practical steps of running profitable farming businesses in key areas such as livestock, aquaculture, cash crops, and value-added services. This initiative is part of Globacom’s contribution to addressing Nigeria’s food sustainability challenge.

According to a press statement from the company, M-Agric is structured as a lottery service, offering users valuable agricultural advice while providing opportunities to win cash prizes, farm equipment, and internships. The service is designed to help Nigerians grow their own food and maximize the potential of the agricultural sector to generate additional income.

Subscribers to M-Agric can opt to receive daily, weekly, or monthly agricultural tips on their mobile devices, with subscription fees set at N50, N200, and N500, respectively. New and existing prepaid and postpaid customers are offered a free 24-hour trial of the service. Each week, subscribers who correctly answer trivia questions related to the agricultural topics are entered into a draw, with the chance to win significant rewards based on their performance.

The winners are determined by their success in answering the trivia questions, with the top scorers receiving prizes ranging from airtime to cash. Globacom has emphasized that the service is intended to motivate and enable young Nigerians to pursue farming as a viable and sustainable profession, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture.

However, the lottery-style approach has sparked some debate, with questions arising about whether the focus on prizes detracts from the broader goal of promoting genuine agricultural engagement and long-term food security in Nigeria.
