Gospel Singer Ayotunde Richard Arrested Again Amid Legal Dispute with Church Leader

Ayotunde Richard, a gospel singer and former member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM), has been arrested by the Nigerian police following a petition filed by Davidson Adejuwon, a lawyer reportedly associated with the church’s founder, Dr. Daniel Olukoya.

Adejuwon’s petition alleges various acts of cyberbullying and libel against Olukoya by Richard and others. While the petition was submitted on behalf of Mrs. Sanni, an aide to Olukoya responsible for the cleric’s social media affairs, it was not filed directly by Olukoya.

Richard, who previously filed a lawsuit against Pastor Olukoya over alleged violations of his fundamental human rights, claims he was unlawfully detained by the police at the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, for eight days. He alleges his detention was orchestrated by Olukoya, in collusion with Superintendent Ayoleyi Tawose Ajayi, reportedly a member of MFM and a close associate of the cleric.

Despite Richard’s legal action against Olukoya, he was arrested at his home by police officers from the Lagos State Police Command, acting on Adejuwon’s petition. Richard’s lawyer, Adeshina Ogunlana, asserts that the police did not produce a formal invitation, arrest warrant, or petition during the arrest.

After negotiations, Richard was released but subsequently detained when he presented himself at the police station as agreed. This detention occurred despite a court order prohibiting further arrests related to Richard’s case against the police force.

While Richard remains in police custody, questions arise about the legality and motivations behind his arrest and continued detention. The unfolding legal saga underscores tensions between Richard, Pastor Olukoya, and the Nigerian police, with implications for freedom of expression and justice in Nigeria.
