In a significant legal development, a groom and 11 others have been remanded in custody by the Port Harcourt High Court in Rivers State. The suspects are linked to the murder of Inspector Christiana Erekere and face a total of 13 charges, including conspiracy to murder and murder.

The tragic event occurred on April 25, 2024, when Inspector Christiana Erekere was killed during a stop-and-check duty at a police checkpoint in Taaba community, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State. The inspector was attacked by individuals traveling to Akwa Ibom State for a wedding ceremony after a police team questioned the validity of the documents of one of their vehicles, escalating into a fatal mob action.

The accused include the groom, Efeoghene Uwheraka, alongside Joy Uwhereka, Shirley Wealth, Napoleon Uwhereka, Ejiro Ejogbamu, Moses Agege, Precious Iyota, Kikelomo Odusanya, Wealth Ojoh, Ighofose Oke, Blessing Ovie, and Emeka Joshua. All 12 suspects have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During the court session, Justice Augusta Chukwu presided over the hearing and refused the bail applications submitted by the defendants’ lawyers. Emphasizing the gravity of the charges, Justice Chukwu adjourned the matter to October 8 for an accelerated hearing.
