
In commemoration of the International Day of person’s with Disabilities, Hope Inspired Foundation for Women and Youths with Disabilities in collaboration with JONAPWD, the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the office of Her Excellency, the wife of the governor of Ebonyi State to sensitize the public on the need to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities.
The sensitization took place during the grand finale of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities held at the JONAPWD secretariat yesterday in Abakaliki the Ebonyi state capital.
Oluchi Nwite the Project Manager for Hope Inspired Foundation for Women and Youths with Disabilities during the event explained that the theme for this year’s celebration, ” United in action to rescue and Achieve the sustainable goals for persons with disabilities, for person’s with disabilities and by person’s with Disabilities is a call for action by all stakeholders.
She explained that the importance of social inclusiveness cannot be overemphasized, and to achieve this, the government needs to provide an enabling environment for person’s with Disabilities free from discrimination, violence, and torture on person’s with disabilities.
“There is a need to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution, Ebonyi State VAPP law (as Amended), international tools like Maputo Protocol, and the Universal Declaration of human rights.
“The role of these laws cannot be overemphasized, I’m calling on the state government to domesticate Ebonyi state disability draft bill”. She said.
The chairman of JONAPWD in the state Chieme Odumegu presented an Advocacy ASK to the wife of the Governor calling for the domestication of the disability bill, equipping the JONAPWD secretariat and socio-economic support for survivors of GBV from person’s with Disabilities for proper integration into the society.
Wheelchairs, guide canes, and clutches were distributed to persons’ with Disabilities by the governor’s wife.
