The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that heavy rainfall has caused significant destruction in 33 communities across the state, with 2,517 houses and shops damaged. The affected areas are primarily located in Dukku, Funakaye, and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs).
According to Ibrahim Nalado, Deputy Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at SEMA, the Hina community in Yamaltu/Deba LGA was particularly hard-hit, with approximately 1,000 hectares of farmland—mostly rice, maize, sorghum, and millet—submerged by floodwaters. The loss is especially devastating as farmers were preparing for the harvest season.
Although no lives were lost in the disaster, two children sustained injuries in Dukku LGA, and seven animals were reportedly washed away by the flood. Nalado noted that while the farmers are understandably distressed, they have accepted the situation as a natural occurrence.
In a related incident, about 1,650 houses were also destroyed by flooding in Jajere and Yunusari towns in Yobe State. The widespread damage highlights the severe impact of seasonal rains in the region, underscoring the need for improved flood management and disaster preparedness efforts.
