Joint Committee Probes Bribery Scandal Involving EFCC and Nigerian Correctional Service
On Friday, the House of Representatives summoned the Chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and popular Nigerian celebrity Bobrisky over allegations of bribery involving the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
According to Channels TV, the summons was initiated by Jon Ginger Onwusibe, Lead Chairperson of the joint committee, who expressed concern over the alarming corruption allegations. The case involves accusations of bribery linked to Bobrisky’s prior arrest for money laundering and Naira abuse.
Other high-ranking officials also summoned include Lagos Command Controller of Corrections Ben Freedman, NCoS board secretary Ja’afaru Ahmed, and Deputy Controllers Siriku Adekunle and Michael Anugwa of the Medium and Maximum Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri.
The joint committee’s letter, dated September 27, 2024, calls for the EFCC Chairperson and the Comptroller General of NCoS to appear before the committee on Monday with all involved officers.
This follows a report by Premium Times on Thursday, revealing that several senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service were suspended over alleged bribery linked to Bobrisky. Among those suspended are Michael Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, both of whom oversee Kirikiri’s Medium and Maximum Security Custodial Centres.
The bribery allegations surfaced after an Instagram post by Martins Otse (VDM), which featured an audio recording of Bobrisky discussing a purported N15 million bribe to EFCC officials in exchange for dropping money laundering charges. The audio came a month after Bobrisky’s release from prison, following a six-month sentence for Naira abuse.
In response, EFCC Chairperson Ola Olukoyede has launched an investigation and summoned both Bobrisky and VDM to assist in uncovering the truth. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has also ordered a comprehensive probe into the bribery allegations involving NCoS officials.
