Lagos Assembly Members Meet With Tinubu Amidst Leadership Tussle
The ongoing leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly has escalated, with members seeking the intervention of President Bola Tinubu. This move comes weeks after the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, which has triggered significant political tension in the state.
The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 members of the House impeached Obasa, citing allegations of abuse of office and financial mismanagement. The impeachment has since created a deep rift within the Assembly, leading to a series of meetings and investigations.
Recently, members of the Assembly traveled to Abuja to meet with President Tinubu to discuss the volatile situation. This meeting follows a gathering at Lagos House Marina on Monday, February 3rd, which included Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat, and members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), led by Tajudeen Olusi. While the official agenda of the Lagos House meeting remained undisclosed, it is widely believed that Obasa’s removal and the ensuing crisis were central topics of discussion.
The situation has also drawn the attention of the Department of State Services (DSS). The DSS recently questioned several lawmakers following a petition allegedly filed by Obasa, claiming his removal was politically motivated and involved misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. The lawmakers were detained for approximately six hours before being released.
The meeting with President Tinubu underscores the gravity of the situation and the desire for a swift resolution to the leadership crisis plaguing the Lagos State House of Assembly.
