The Lagos State Government has taken a firm stance on property regulation by issuing contravention notices to more than 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme in Eti-Osa Local Government Area and the Lekki waterfront setbacks.
- Mayegun Waterfront Scheme: The state government announced the action on Tuesday through its X handle, stating that the notices aim to prevent slum creation, protect the Lagos State Masterplan, and curb coastal erosion. Property occupants have been given 7 days to provide necessary documentation and approvals. Failure to comply will result in demolition notices.
- Lekki Waterfront Setbacks: The government has also targeted properties and companies, including Farm City, Jonah Court, DHL, Polo Avenue, and 65 others along Admiralty Way and Wole Olateju in Lekki Phase 1. These entities are accused of encroaching on the Lekki Cowrie Creek and violating waterfront regulations.
Yacoob Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, emphasized that the properties in question are occupying the setbacks in violation of Lagos State Waterfront Law No 3 of 2009.
Affected parties must take required action by reporting to the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development at the state secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, with proof of their legal rights to occupy the setbacks, the consequences for non-compliance may lead to the sealing or demolition of the properties.
This initiative reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to regulate waterfront development and ensure adherence to urban planning laws.
