Strategic Meeting Set to Strengthen Justice System in Lagos State
The Lagos State Government is initiating a collaboration with key stakeholders to bolster the justice delivery system across the state. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, announced plans for a strategic meeting themed “Enhancing Collaboration for Effective Justice Delivery,” scheduled for October 23rd and 24th, 2024, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja.
This meeting follows the Lagos Justice Summit held in May 2024, where participants identified the necessity for improved cooperation within the justice sector. The gathering aims to harmonize the operations of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance service delivery and minimize governmental liabilities, particularly in land administration, physical planning, and environmental management.
Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Ministry of Justice has achieved significant milestones over the past year. These include improving access to legal services, enhancing prosecution processes, and supporting vulnerable populations. Notable initiatives also encompass the establishment of the Lagos State Criminal Information System to better track inmate cases in correctional facilities.
In addition to ongoing reforms, Pedro highlighted proposed legislation to create a Lis Pendens Registry to prevent land disputes from affecting real estate transactions. He also mentioned the introduction of a Customary Marriage and Dissolution Registry to facilitate official documentation for customary marriages.
Pedro emphasized the need for continuous dialogue among stakeholders to create a more efficient and equitable justice system, underscoring the essential roles of media, community leaders, and government agencies in promoting transparency and accountability.
