Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede Confirmed as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff

House of Representatives Approves Appointment of Oluyede to Lead Nigerian Army

The House of Representatives has confirmed the appointment of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as Nigeria’s substantive Chief of Army Staff. The decision, finalized on Thursday, November 28, followed a thorough evaluation of his qualifications and leadership by an ad-hoc committee led by Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence.

Presidential Recommendation and Legislative Endorsement

President Bola Tinubu had formally requested Oluyede’s confirmation, citing his extensive military experience and proven contributions to national security. The request was presented to the House on November 26, with the screening process endorsing his leadership capabilities and professionalism.

The committee’s report highlighted Oluyede’s distinguished career, his command expertise, and his ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

A Distinguished Military Career

Lieutenant General Oluyede brings over three decades of military service to his role. He has held key positions in various operations, including:

  • ECOMOG mission in Liberia
  • Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi
  • Operation HADIN KAI in the North East

A graduate of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Army, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps in Kaduna before his elevation.

Transition and New Responsibilities

Oluyede was initially appointed acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, 2024, following the illness and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, on November 6. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general on November 5, shortly before his confirmation as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.

Stakeholders across the country have welcomed his appointment, expressing confidence in his leadership. Oluyede is expected to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor while addressing Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.

A New Chapter for National Security

As Chief of Army Staff, Oluyede will lead efforts to strengthen the Nigerian Army’s operations, enhance personnel welfare, and promote stability across the nation. His confirmation marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s quest for peace and security.
