Nestle Nigeria Stands Firm Amidst Sugar Addition to Infant Products Allegations
Nestle Nigeria, a leading food and beverage company, has refuted recent claims made in an investigative report alleging the addition of sugar to its infant milk and cereal products sold in Nigeria, asserting its adherence to global guidelines.
The investigative report, conducted by Public Eye, a Swiss investigative organization in collaboration with the International Baby Food Action Network, raised concerns about Nestle’s product quality in Nigeria and other low- and middle-income countries. It alleged discrepancies between the quality of products supplied to developed nations and those provided to regions like Nigeria.
According to the report, traces of sugar were purportedly discovered in samples of Nestle’s infant cereal for children aged six months to two years, as well as in follow-up milk formula for infants up to 12 months old.
In response, Nestle Nigeria’s Head of Corporate Communications, Victoria Uwadoka, issued a statement to Vanguard, denying the allegations and asserting the company’s commitment to adhering to global standards.
Uwadoka clarified that Nestle complies with stringent regulations governing baby food and infant formula, emphasizing that no sugars, including sucrose and glucose, are added to infant formulas for children aged 0-12 months, aligning with both international and local guidelines and regulations.
Addressing variations in cereal recipes worldwide, Uwadoka noted that Nestle’s cereals in Europe are available both with and without added sugars. However, she reiterated that in Nigeria, no sugars are added to infant formulas for children aged 0-12 months, and Growing Up Milks likewise contain no added sugars.
Furthermore, Uwadoka highlighted the company’s commitment to fortifying milks and cereals for young children with essential vitamins and minerals, such as iron, aimed at addressing malnutrition.
Amidst the controversy, Nestle Nigeria maintains its stance on quality assurance and compliance with regulatory standards, underscoring its dedication to providing nutritious and safe products for consumers across the globe.
