Nestlé Professional, the Out-of-Home business arm of Nestlé Nigeria, continues to strengthen the local economy by empowering food vendors through its Business of Food workshop. The initiative, now in its 8th edition, has already transformed over 1,900 food businesses across seven states, providing essential skills and knowledge to help vendors enhance their operations and increase their income.
Canteens, grillers, Maishais, and bukas serve as vital providers of daily nutrition to low-income communities in Nigeria. Despite their significant role, these food vendors often lack the support needed to thrive. The empowerment program aims to address this gap by offering networking opportunities, upskilling sessions, and training on crucial aspects of the food industry, such as culinary techniques, menu planning, customer engagement, and hygiene practices.
Mrs. Funmi Osineye, Business Manager for Nestlé Professional in Nigeria, remarked, “We are thrilled to bring the Business of Food workshop to Sokoto. The business of food extends beyond preparing delicious meals; it involves nutrition, pricing, presentation, taste, and hygiene. Our goal is to support food vendors of all sizes by providing them with knowledge and tools from our global insights and local experience. We are confident this will foster lasting change and growth within the local food vendor community, as witnessed in previous locations.”
A highlight of the half-day training session was a masterclass by Chef Faridah on preparing Masa and Miyan Duka, a traditional dish from northern Nigeria that offers a taste of the region’s culinary heritage. The event also featured an exciting cooking competition between teams ‘Chicken’ and ‘Star,’ who vied to create the best jollof spaghetti dish.
Mrs. Osineye assured participants that Nestlé Professional remains committed to supporting the growth and success of food vendors in Nigeria. “We aim to uplift the local food industry, promote entrepreneurship, and create a positive impact in communities,” she said.
