Nigerian Chess Master Tunde Onakoya Aims to Break Guinness World Record for Longest Chess Marathon

Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya, renowned for his advocacy through Chess in Slums Africa, is set to embark on a remarkable journey to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, commencing today.

Onakoya aims to play chess continuously for an astonishing 58 hours without suffering a single defeat. This ambitious feat is not merely about personal achievement but also about championing the dreams of millions of underprivileged children across Africa who lack access to education.

Scheduled to commence at 10 am on April 17 and conclude at 8 pm on April 19, the marathon will unfold at New York City’s iconic Times Square. Onakoya’s determination to break the record resonates with his mission to empower disadvantaged youths through chess.

The current Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds, set by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018.

Expressing his motivation for the challenge, Onakoya emphasized his commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of marginalized children across Africa. He sees this attempt as a symbolic gesture to shed light on the importance of education and opportunity in transforming lives.

In his announcement on social media platform X, Onakoya stated, “On the 17th of April 2024, I will attempt to break the Guinness World record for the longest Chess marathon in the heart of Times Square New York City for 58 hours without losing a game,” underscoring his dedication to the cause.

Onakoya’s journey is deeply rooted in his own experiences of hardship and deprivation. He recalls the pain of hunger and the profound impact of lacking access to essential resources, particularly education. His empathy drives him to use chess as a tool for empowerment and social change.

In an interview, Onakoya reflected on his mission, highlighting the importance of empathy and compassion in his work. He aims to be the support he wished he had received in his youth, extending opportunities to those in need.

As Onakoya prepares to embark on this monumental endeavor, he calls upon Nigerians residing in New York to offer their enthusiastic support. The attempt will be livestreamed on YouTube, inviting global audiences to witness this inspiring journey unfold.
