Nigeria’s First Olympic Cyclist Thanks German Team for Support Amid Equipment Shortfall
Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic cyclist, Ese Ukpeseraye, has publicly thanked the German cycling team for providing her with a bicycle to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics. This gesture allowed her to participate in two track cycling events after she faced unexpected challenges sourcing the necessary equipment.
Ukpeseraye, who was initially only registered for the women’s road race, found herself competing in two track events on short notice. On the social media platform X, the 25-year-old expressed her gratitude to the German team for their act of sportsmanship, which enabled her to compete despite not having the required bicycle.
Her post sparked criticism among Nigerians online, who questioned the competency of the national sports authorities. The incident has also brought to light earlier administrative missteps during the games, such as Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili being left off the entry list for the women’s 100m race.
Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, John Owan Enoh, addressed the situation, explaining that the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) had offered Nigeria last-minute slots in two women’s track events due to the disqualification of another country. The offer came after Ukpeseraye and Team Nigeria had already arrived in Paris.
“For this track race reallocated to Team Nigeria, a very special equipment (approved specifically for the Olympic track game) is used,” Enoh posted on X. He explained that acquiring the specialized Olympic track bikes would have taken months, making it impossible to secure them in time.
Despite these explanations, online commenters remained skeptical, pointing out the broader issues within Nigeria’s sports administration, especially in light of other incidents like Favour Ofili’s disqualification.
Ese Ukpeseraye’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics marked a historic moment for Nigeria, as she became the first Nigerian, male or female, to compete in an Olympic cycling event. Her Olympic journey, however, was fraught with challenges.
In her first event, the women’s road race, Ukpeseraye was among several athletes who did not complete the 154km (96-mile) route. Despite not finishing, she expressed pride in representing Nigeria on such a global stage, saying, “It was an honor to represent Nigeria at this level. Although I couldn’t finish the race, being here is a victory in itself.”
She also competed in two track events, finishing sixth in her keirin heat and 28th in the sprint qualifiers, missing out on the finals. Nonetheless, Ukpeseraye remains proud of her accomplishments, stating on X that she has “set the ball rolling for cycling in Nigeria.”
Her determination and the support she received from the German team underscore the challenges and triumphs of Nigerian athletes on the global stage, highlighting both the need for better support structures and the resilience of the athletes themselves.
