Nigerian Telecom Subscribers Urge Extension of NIN-SIM Linkage Deadline Amidst Connectivity Concerns

Nigerian Telecom Subscribers Appeal for 30-Day Extension of NIN-SIM Linkage Deadline

Telecommunications subscribers across Nigeria are calling for an extension of the National Identity Number (NIN) and Subscriber Identity/Identification Module (SIM) linkage deadline by 30 days, expressing concerns over potential disconnections by mobile network operators.

Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the National President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), emphasized the need for additional time during a telephone interview on Wednesday.

Ogunbanjo highlighted the challenges faced by subscribers in completing their NIN-SIM linkage, urging both mobile network operators and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to consider granting a 30-day grace period to avoid disruptions in connectivity.

“It is a difficult time for telecom subscribers in Nigeria as the NIN-SIM linkage deadline expired on February 28. I want to use this medium to appeal to operators and NCC to give subscribers an additional 30-day grace period,” Ogunbanjo stated.

The call for an extension comes after telecom operators, following directives from the NCC, had insisted on enforcing the February 28 deadline to bar subscribers without NIN-SIM linkage, citing the necessity to address rising insecurity in the country.

The integration policy of SIM cards into the NIN database was announced by Isa Pantami, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, in December 2020, as part of efforts to enhance security measures and streamline identification processes.
