In a move that has sparked widespread outcry among nurses and midwives nationwide, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has come under fire for deactivating its verification portal since December 2023. The decision, which came without prior warning, has left many healthcare professionals feeling frustrated and uncertain about their future career prospects.
The NMCN, established as the sole regulatory body overseeing nursing and midwifery standards in Nigeria, has faced mounting criticism over the abrupt closure of its verification portal. This portal, essential for verifying professional licenses, serves as a crucial tool for nurses and midwives seeking career advancement and opportunities both within and outside the country.
According to a memo dated December 22, 2023, the NMCN instructed the closure of the verification portal, leaving many members of the nursing community blindsided and confused. Despite repeated inquiries, the council has remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the portal’s deactivation and has provided no timeline for its reopening.
The lack of transparency surrounding the council’s decision has raised concerns about potential motives behind the portal’s closure. Many nurses view this move as an attempt by the council to impede their freedom to explore career opportunities elsewhere, hindering their professional growth and mobility.
Jude Chiedu, a nurse, expressed frustration, stating, “The lack of communication and transparency surrounding the council’s decision has left many nurses feeling uncertain about their professional future.” Others, like Felix Obasi, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the detrimental impact on their career progression and relocation plans.
Amid mounting frustration, nurses and midwives have taken to social media platforms to voice their concerns and demand accountability from the NMCN. Florence Chi Omega, known as @NurseZemira on social media, urged the council to address the issue promptly, emphasizing the need for clear communication and swift resolution.
Despite repeated attempts to seek clarification, the Registrar of the council, Faruk Abubakar, has remained inaccessible, further fueling suspicions and frustration among the nursing community.
As nurses and midwives continue to grapple with the fallout from the portal’s closure, calls for transparency, accountability, and swift resolution of the issue have grown louder. The controversy surrounding the NMCN’s decision underscores the pressing need for regulatory bodies to prioritize the interests and well-being of healthcare professionals in Nigeria
