The operational base of the Yoruba Nation, led by Modupe Onitiri-Abiola, one of the widows of late presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, was demolished by the Oyo State Government on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state’s capital.
The building, located on Toye Oyesola Street in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, served as a hub for the activities of the Yoruba Nation movement.
The demolition comes in the wake of recent events involving armed men in Army uniforms purportedly affiliated with the Yoruba Nation. These individuals attempted to forcefully take over the Oyo State House of Assembly but were thwarted by a joint operation involving security agents.
Confirming the demolition, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, CP Fatai Owoseni (retd.), stated that the action was taken in line with security measures and to maintain peace and order in the state.
In a related development, twenty-nine suspects who were apprehended in connection with the foiled armed invasion of the Oyo State Secretariat were arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The suspects, facing a seven-count charge including treasonable felony, unlawful society, illegal possession of firearms, and conduct likely to cause breach of peace, were brought before the court in a case with charge number Mi/520c/2024 between the Commissioner of Police and the accused.
The demolition of the Yoruba Nation operational base and the subsequent arraignment of suspects highlight the ongoing tension and security challenges in Oyo State, particularly in relation to secessionist movements and attempts to disrupt public order.
