Nigerian Duo P-Square Splits Again, Paul Okoye Confirms
More than two years after their highly-publicized reunion, Nigerian singing twins Peter and Paul Okoye, known as P-Square, have split once more. Paul Nonso Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, confirmed the latest separation from his twin brother Peter Okoye, aka Mr P, during a recent interview with a popular FM station.
The brothers, who began their musical career in 1999 and dominated the African music industry for over a decade, first separated in 2016. They reunited in 2021 after a four-year rift filled with public controversies that alienated colleagues and fans.
During their initial split, Paul (Rudeboy) released hits like “Fire Fire” and “Nkenji Keke,” while Peter (Mr P) produced tracks such as “For My Head” and “Cool It Down.”
Paul revealed that their problems started in 2014 with the release of their song “Ejeajo” featuring American rapper T.I. He explained that fan debates about their roles—Paul as the singer and Peter as the dancer—contributed to their 2017 separation. This perception affected their collaboration with T.I., as fans missed Paul’s signature voice on their tracks.
Paul clarified that their elder brother, Jude Okoye, who was previously blamed for their issues, had no involvement in this split. “When we came back, Jude was not even in the picture at all. No manager, no director, nothing. He was still on his own,” Paul said.
He emphasized the importance of being cautious about the people brought close, especially those who were not supportive in the past. Paul had hoped their reunion would yield several hit albums but is now focusing on his solo career as Rudeboy.
Paul disclosed that he had tried to address the issue of their roles within the duo, encouraging Peter to embrace his strengths as a dancer. However, despite efforts to share the creative process equally, tensions remained.
“The new P-Square was peaceful. I needed the past mistakes not to repeat themselves. But then again, he (Peter) said he’s no more doing (no longer interested). In fact, he told me in the face that he wants to quit. I asked if we could make it public and he refused. But what will happen when I go solo? People will call me the bad person. That’s why I’m speaking up now,” Paul explained.
Paul concluded by stating that all his efforts to protect and maintain P-Square were unsuccessful, leading to the current split.
