Police Confirm Raid on NLC Secretariat Was Unrelated to Labour Congress Activities
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the recent raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) National Secretariat, known as Labour House, located in Abuja’s Central Business District. However, the police clarified that the operation was not aimed at the NLC or its activities.
In a statement issued on August 7, 2024, by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the police responded to claims made by the NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations. The NLC had suggested that police officers, accompanied by individuals in black T-shirts and plain clothes, had raided the Labour House.
The police clarified the situation, stating, “A prime criminal suspect in an ongoing investigation was traced to a shop within the building in the Central Business District, Abuja.” The statement further explained that detectives, armed with the appropriate legal authority, inadvertently entered the NLC building during the operation.
According to the police, the operation was a well-coordinated and lawful effort to apprehend a foreign national who is implicated in numerous criminal activities across Nigeria and other African countries. The police stressed that the raid had no connection with the NLC, its Secretariat, staff, or leadership. “The NLC Secretariat was not the focus of the operation, which was targeted at a rented shop within the building used by the suspect as a front for his criminal activities in Nigeria,” the statement emphasized.
The police have called for cooperation from the NLC leadership as the investigation continues. They highlighted the high-profile nature of the suspect, noting that he poses a significant security threat to Nigeria and other African nations. The police underscored the importance of this investigation for the safety of all involved, including the NLC.
Reaffirming their commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights, the Nigeria Police Force urged Nigerians to remain vigilant. “We also urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and to conduct security profiling of individuals seeking to rent space within their premises,” the statement concluded.
This clarification from the police aims to address concerns raised by the NLC and reassure the public that the operation was focused solely on a criminal investigation, with no intention to interfere with the activities of the Labour Congress.
