Humberside Police has initiated an inquiry into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors following concerns raised about the handling of deceased individuals. The investigation, prompted by reports of potential lapses in the “care of the deceased,” has led to the removal of bodies from the firm’s premises in various locations.
Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin confirmed the ongoing investigation, highlighting collaborative efforts with local authorities and the coroner’s office. “Extensive enquiries” are underway to comprehensively understand the nature of the concerns raised.
In response to these developments, cordons have been established at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors’ three branches situated in Hessle Road and Anlaby Road in Hull, as well as in Beverley. As part of the investigation, deceased individuals are being transferred from the Hessle Road location to the local authority mortuary in Hull.
Mr. McLoughlin emphasized that the focus of the investigation revolves around apprehensions regarding the storage and management processes concerning the care of the deceased at these facilities.
To address public concerns, Humberside Police has established dedicated helpline numbers, catering to individuals within the UK and abroad.
Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, described on its website as a family-run business established in 2010, has been the subject of numerous calls from worried members of the public. Mr. McLoughlin assured that efforts are underway to directly engage with affected families.
In light of the sensitive nature of the investigation and its impact on grieving families, Mr. McLoughlin urged the public to abstain from speculation and to demonstrate respect towards those affected.
