Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new members to the governing boards of 111 Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. This decision involves 555 individuals who will serve as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of these institutions’ governing boards.
The Federal Ministry of Education, led by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced these appointments in an official advertorial. Each institution will have a chairperson and four additional members on its governing board.
Walson-Jack stated, “The inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. Both events will commence at 9:00 am daily.”
President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the list to PUNCH, noting, “This is from the Federal Ministry of Education; they make the nominations and forward them to the President to sign. But they are at liberty to release it from their end.”
This development follows closely on the heels of tensions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which recently threatened to strike. ASUU criticized the government’s delay in appointing governing councils for federal universities and condemned what it perceived as President Tinubu’s indifferent approach to academic issues.
During a press briefing at the University of Abuja, ASUU rejected the government’s proposed 35 percent salary increment for professors and 25 percent for other academic staff, deeming the measures insufficient.
This appointment of governing boards is seen as a crucial step in addressing some of the concerns raised by ASUU and ensuring better governance and oversight in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
