The Taraba State Government has suspended seven public secondary school principals for actions that allegedly undermined the state’s free education policy. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Augustina Yahaya.
Governor Agbu Kefas, who assumed office in May 2023, implemented a free education policy for public schools and committed to covering the WAEC and NECO fees for students.
The affected schools are:
- Government Day Secondary School, Jauro Yino
- GDSS Kakulu in Zing
- Government Day Secondary School, Kofai
- Salihu Dogo in Jalingo
- GDSS Kununi in Lau
- GDSS Jauro Yinu in Ardo-Kola
- GSS Takum
- GDSS Yakassai in Wukari
Commissioner Yahaya stated that the suspended principals engaged in actions aimed at sabotaging the governor’s free education initiative. “The principal of Government Day Secondary School, Jauro Yino, is suspended for collecting money from students for NECO; the principal of Yakasali in Wukari is suspended for collecting money and selling slots of WAEC to external students,” she said.
Additionally, the principal of GDSS Kakulu in Zing was suspended for negligence, having failed to properly monitor the school, resulting in 105 final-year students being denied exam registration.
The state government emphasized its commitment to upholding the free education policy and ensuring that all students receive the benefits without any financial burden.
