In response to the severe weather impacting parts of KwaZulu-Natal since Monday, Shoprite has swiftly mobilized to assist affected community members. The Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchens have been providing warm meals to thousands of displaced residents, serving 4,000 meals (including soup and bread) daily in areas such as Tongaat and Newcastle.
In addition to hot meals, hundreds of blankets and care packages—containing essentials like soap, face cloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and lotion—are being distributed to affected families in partnership with Gift of the Givers.
“We remain in close contact with the relevant disaster relief organizations and authorities to determine what aid is required and how we can be of further support,” said Sanjeev Raghubir, Chief Sustainability Officer at the Shoprite Group.
Customers who wish to support relief efforts can donate non-perishable foods at the collection trolleys available in all Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets across KwaZulu-Natal. Alternatively, they can contribute as little as R5 to the #ActForChange Fund at the till point in all Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave supermarkets nationwide. 100% of the donations collected will go to Gift of the Givers in support of relief efforts nationwide.
