Legal Protection for Nigerian Artists Takes Center Stage at Transformative Workshop
Lagos, Nigeria – The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA), in partnership with the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA) and Kenna Partners, has spearheaded a landmark initiative to strengthen copyright protection for Nigerian artists. The workshop, titled “Empowering Artists: Navigating Legal and Contractual Issues in the Arts World,” took place at YSMA on January 17, 2025, providing crucial insights into copyright laws, intellectual property rights, and contractual safeguards for artists.
This first-of-its-kind collaboration with the GFA highlighted the importance of copyright protection in fostering innovation and ensuring fair compensation in Nigeria’s burgeoning creative industry. Legal experts Okechukwu Ekweanya and Ifunanya Ikwueto underscored the need for heightened awareness and enforcement of art-specific agreements, noting that many artists risk financial losses due to overlooked legal protections.
Museum Director Dr. Jess Castellote reiterated YSMA’s dedication to artist empowerment: “At YSMA, we believe that a thriving creative economy is vital for cultural preservation and economic progress. By educating artists on their legal rights, particularly around copyright, we bridge a critical knowledge gap that strengthens their careers and benefits the nation at large.”
Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, Senior Partner at Kenna Partners, emphasized the value of artists’ contributions to society: “Artists are the visionaries who document our culture, history, and collective journey. To fully realize their potential, they must understand and enforce their rights, ensuring they make informed decisions in their professional dealings.”
GFA President, George Edozie, described the initiative as more than just an educational effort, calling it “a rallying cry for Nigerian artists to take control of their intellectual property. Protecting their creative rights ensures fair compensation and elevates the entire art industry.”
With 30 artists in attendance, the workshop equipped participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to safeguard their intellectual property and leverage their artistry for sustainable careers.
