How Abubakar Adamu Adele. SA media and publicity to incumbent Hon. Chairman Donga local -government area of Taraba State, treat the local government autonomy in an exclusive interview with our editor,
below are the extracts
QUESTION: what are your views on the local government autonomy
First and foremost…
Local Government autonomy means that the Local Government is elected at the local level and operates independently of the State and Federal Government. The Local Government should not be an appendage or field office of the state government.
In brief. Local government is the most corrupted tier of government in Nigeria
Some challenges local government are facing are:
Inadequate autonomy has been found to be the independent variable in the challenges.
Other challenges include inadequate finances, weak intergovernmental relations, fledging democracy and grand corruption. These must be adequately tackled for LGs to make more positive impact in the localities.

Practically!
Local government autonomy is a perfect practices of financial independency for local government to make a financial or capital visibilities that will anchor appropriate utilizations of scarce responsibilities such as, productions, good tolerance to empowerments and employments policy, infrastructural developments, interplay independency and other related values.
It has been known that the mystery of autonomy decried over the installation of OBJ as the president of Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was themed that, the emphasis of local government autonomy, is to create direct access local government to have financial freedom from the Federal Government just like state government in other to straighten diversification of responsibilities and federal character impressions.
It’s not as if LG autonomy is under deformed in this present administration, no! It has been on a rotten map and under abused of policy for decades and it stood firm to denied the valid responsibilities of 774 LG Chairmen.
Even doe LG Joint Account was installed as a sub-policy(project) that will eased the burdened and support the financial independency of LGAs in case of capital weaknesses through interplay between state government & and local government in early 2000s.
The idea was the collaborative efforts between the SG & LG to have a join financial imputations through join savings in other for state government to support the LG in case if LGs cannot be able to meet up their financial demands. It has been well understandable that 20% of the joint accounts between state and LG will be addressed to LG Teachers Training, but it failed drastically. Ask your self, what is the motive behind the motionless adventure that Mr. President OBJ create if he can denied access for LG to have their own opinion with the act in reference to what happened in Lagos for the creation of another LGA by Tinubu when he was the governor. For that, we should sympathies with chairmen’s.
My view
The executive order signed by PMB may 2020 to outrightly grant financial autonomy to the judiciary legislatures and local govt council as the third tier of govt is highly commendable and to me is the best policy this administration has ever recorded.
I am a big fan of local govt autonomy due to d relevance and advertent impact.
This will lead to policy paradigm shift towards a more people friendly leadership structure of the long running dysfunctional polity.
Worthy to note is that this autonomy covers or spells out the independent function of the local govt which includes the provision and maintenance of children, adult and vacation education. You see all chairmen and people responsible in discharging this duties will at least have something to do, which will keep them occupied and failure to do this the masses at the grassroots already knows whose responsibility it is instead of the chairmen just staying in the state capital doing nothing
Other functions include agriculture development, since they re the ones at the grassroots the know their people’s plight more than anyone else so they tend to be more connection and solution to any matter arising, e.g mararaba our country home is in dire need of water its takes only an indigene or a close ally to know this problem but wen it is left in the hands of a distant or no residential leader he tend to find it difficult to know this problems
