Ethel Ekpe, a revered figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, has sadly passed away on Wednesday in Lagos State after a courageous battle with cancer. The news of her demise was confirmed by Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Director-General of the National Film and Video Censors Board, through a heartfelt Facebook post.
Ekpe, best known for her iconic portrayal of ‘Segi’ in the renowned sitcom “Basi and Company” by Ken Saro Wiwa on the Nigerian Television Authority, left an indelible mark on the industry. Her talent extended beyond her role in “Basi and Company,” as she also graced the screens in productions such as Amaka Igwe’s “Forever” and “Sons of the Caliphate.”
Dr. Husseini’s poignant announcement on Facebook read, “I have been reliably informed that Ethel Ekpe, (Ethel Aderemi nee Ekpe), the screen beauty that delighted fans with her inimitable interpretation of the role of Segi in the defunct sitcom on Nigerian Television Authority by Ken Saro Wiwa titled ‘Basi and Company’ has passed on.”
He continued, “The actress and later-day Pastor and star of Amaka Igwe’s ‘Forever’ and most recently ‘Sons of the Caliphate’ reportedly died of Cancer today in Lagos. She will be sorely missed.”
Expressing his personal connection to Ekpe, Dr. Husseini shared, “My family will particularly miss her because we named my second daughter Ethel, after her. Good night good woman!”
Ethel Ekpe’s contribution to Nigerian entertainment will be remembered fondly, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the industry. She leaves behind a profound impact on both her colleagues and her countless fans.
