The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Ebonyi chapter has encouraged parents and society on increased care and attention to the education of children for a better nation.
Comrade Nkechinyere Oginyi, Chairperson of the association in the state, advised on Sunday, during an outreach organized by the women journalists to mark, the 2022 edition of the World Children’s Day celebration, with the theme: “Inclusion, for every child”.
The Day was established as Universal Children’s Day, celebrated, on November 20, each year to promote international togetherness, and awareness among children and improve their welfare.
Oginyi, represented by Comrade Chika Okorie of NTA Abakaliki said the advocacy visit to Emmanual Anglican Church, Azuiyiokwu in Abakaliki was to reawaken parents and the society’s consciousness to pay proper attention to the basic rights of their children.
She stated their basic rights include education, voice, inclusion in decision-making, healthy environment to strive among other rights to grow up better.
She added that the call for urgency in ensuring their well-being and development was respect for human rights and second to none.
She urged society to end discrimination among children and young people.
“NAWJO celebrates the children and champions their cause, especially the vulnerable ones, the society does not treat fairly.
“We should know as parents, every adult, and the society that it is our responsibility to help them grow, through their basic rights for a better society,” Oginyi said.
Comrade Amarachukwu Egwuagha also emphasized the need for the inclusion of children in decisions making for mental well-being, advocating, promoting, and celebrate their right to education.
In a remark, the Clergy of the Church, Rev. Emmanuel Oselebe, commended the association for celebrating the children and their contributions to society.
The event featured the enlightenment of children on the importance of the celebration and their rights by the group.
