Zamfara Governor Denies N400 Million Trip Spending

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has refuted claims that his government utilized N400 million on both local and international trips. The denial follows allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC), which the governor dismisses as politically driven.

Lawal contends that the opposition is seeking a pretext to criticize his administration before the state’s populace. He clarifies that an online publication inaccurately asserted the governor spent N170,276,294.31 on international travel, N221,567,094 on local travel, and N6,929,500.00 on private security within three months.

The governor attributes the misinformation to a deliberate misinterpretation of budget data, emphasizing that the First, Second, and Third Quarters fall under the immediate past administration.

In a statement, Lawal declares, “We have read a report from the online, alleging that Governor Dauda Lawal spent over N400 million on foreign trips. This is false and an attempt to tarnish the governor’s image.”

He underscores the principles of transparency and accountability as the bedrock of his government, encouraging citizens to verify all relevant information on the official Zamfara State Government website.

Lawal asserts, “Under Governor Dauda Lawal, we have implemented a system of complete transparency and accountability, leaving no room for misuse of funds.”

The governor clarifies that since assuming office on May 29, 2023, he has undertaken only three official foreign trips, including attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in the United States, a United Nations Development Programme Retreat in Kigali, Rwanda, and a meeting with the President of the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

He adds that the Kigali retreat was organized by the Nigerian Governors Forum and sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme, dispelling any government expenditure on it.

Lawal concludes, “Our administration’s rescue mission is comprehensive and covers all aspects of governance. We will not be deterred or slowed down by any misinformation.”
