Zenith Bank Plc swiftly dismissed allegations surrounding the arrest of its Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, in connection to the ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation into the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. In a statement released on Wednesday through the Nigerian Exchange Limited, the bank categorically denied the reported arrest, labeling it as entirely false.
The statement, signed by the bank’s Company Secretary/General Counsel, Michael Otu, emphasized that Dr. Onyeagwu was not apprehended or detained by the EFCC or any other anti-graft agency. It further clarified that the CEO is actively carrying out his responsibilities at the bank, refuting the circulating rumors.
Earlier reports on Tuesday hinted at senior bank executives facing questioning from the anti-graft agency as part of its investigation into the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, alongside the suspended minister, Betta Edu.
Meanwhile, in response to Edu’s suspension, President Bola Tinubu has directed the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Olumuyiwa Enitan, to assume management responsibilities for the ministry.
